Wedding invitations are beautiful and announce to everyone the big news about your big day! When crafting the perfect wedding invitation it is important to know the proper wedding invitation wording along with what to avoid when wording your wedding invitations. Our easy to review guide will walk you through it one step at a time and get you on the right track!
Expert Tips: What You Should Avoid In Your Wedding Invitations
There are lots of little things you will want to avoid when wording your wedding invitations. We have a full list of expert tips on what to avoid so you don’t make an invitation faux pas.
Don’t Write Information Onto The Bottom Of The Wedding Invite. The wedding invitation should only have the traditional information about the couple and where and when their ceremony will take place. Any other information should be included in separate enclosure cards.
Don’t Print Information On The Back Of The Invitation. You would have for your guests to miss important details or information about your wedding so it is better to not print anything on the back of the invitation as many guests will not look at the back.
Don’t Write The Bride’s Married Name. It is confusing for guests to use the bride’s married name before the wedding and an official name change.
Don’t Put The Line “No Kids”. Some couples want to have an adult wedding only which is totally fine but it is important to inform your guests. The best way to tell your guests is to either include this information on an enclosure card and also by addressing the invitation to the couple only and not the family is a clue.
Wedding Invitation Wording Etiquette
There is a lot of etiquettes when dealing with weddings and the wedding invitation is no exception. To help you navigate the proper etiquette for your wedding invitations we have compiled a list of the main etiquette tips.
1. Use proper upper-case letters for names, titles, locations along with names of days and months but lower-case for numbers.
2. Traditionally the host of the wedding will have their names on the invitations as well as the couples.
3. Include the ceremony location and its address.
4. The phrase “request the honor of your presence” is to be used when the ceremony is taking place in a house of worship.
5. The phrase “request the pleasure of your company” is to be used when the ceremony is taking place outside of a house of worship.
6. Avoid adding too much information on the invitation. Stick to the host, couple’s names, location, date, and time- anything that does not need to be on the invite can be added with another card.
7. Always proofread your invitation and have a third party look it over as well
Wedding Invitation Wording Line by Line
When you breakdown the wording of a wedding invitation it is important to see each block of wording as a separate section which you can modify, change, or rearrange to fit your liking.
The Host Line
The host line should spell out who is hosting the wedding. Traditionally this line was reserved for who was paying for the wedding but that is not always the case. The host line can be one set of parents, both sets of parents, the couple and parents, or just the couple.
What If Any Parents are Deceased?
If any of the parents are deceased it is perfectly reasonable to add the line “the daughter/son of the late…”
What If Any Parents are Divorced and/or Remarried?
If any of the parents are divorced or remarried things can get tricky. The divorced couple can still list their names side by sides such as Ms. Maryann Smith and Mr. Fred Thomas since they are the parents of the bride/groom. If someone is remarried they can phrase the line using Mr. and Mrs. Maryann Smith and Mr. Fred Thomas.
The Request Line
There is no one answer to this; it comes down to personal preference really. Traditionally, using request the pleasure of your company for ceremonies outside of a house of worship and request the honor of your presence for a ceremony taking place inside a house of worship. With the modern wedding invitation, there really are hundreds of ways of stating the request line.
The Names of Couple
The name of the couple who will be getting married should be clearly stated in the invitation. Traditionally, the bride’s name comes first followed by the groom’s name. If it is a same-sex wedding the person whose family is hosting the wedding can come first but it is up to personal preference.
The Date and Time
The date and time should be clear for your guests to read. Many couples still want their wedding invitation time to be formal and state “Half-past three o’clock in the afternoon” however more modern invitations are using more casual wording.
The Location
The location should be listed for where the ceremony will take place including the address of the location name and address. Most of the time this information is the last to appear on the invitation and sometimes is in smaller font.
Reception Information
The reception information should be included in a separate enclosure card. This information should have the location name, date, and time of the reception along with any travel information, parking information, etc…
Dress Code
If a dress code is requested it is best to indicate that on a separate card or most often it is added to the reception information card. It is best to be as clear as possible so guests are not left guessing. Common dress code wording is Black Tie, Black Tie Optional, Cocktail Attire, Casual Attire.
RSVP Card
The RSVP card is very important as this is the way you will know who is planning to attend your wedding ceremony and reception. The RSVP card should have a place line for the names of who will or will not be attending and sometimes this card will have guests indicate which meal they would like to have as well.
